Captain
Do you feel at home behind the helm and know how to keep a cool head when conditions change? Do you enjoy taking responsibility for your vessel, your crew, and your guests and get your energy from spending your days at sea? As a Captain at BlueFinn, you’re the one keeping an eye on the bigger picture. You’ll safely navigate the waters around Curaçao, lead the crew, and make sure everything on board runs smoothly. But being a good captain takes more than knowing how to handle a vessel. You’re welcoming, decisive, hands-on, and know when it’s time to adjust course, both literally and figuratively.
What will you do?
As Captain, you have overall responsibility on board. You’re constantly considering safety, weather and sailing conditions, the technical condition of the vessel, your crew, and of course our guests. At the same time, you’re not watching from the sidelines: at BlueFinn, the Captain is part of the crew and actively involved in the daily operation.
- Safely and responsibly operate the vessel during our daily charters and tours
- Ensure the safety of all guests and crew on board
- Assess weather, sailing, and operational conditions
- Carry out safety checks and ensure all safety equipment is present and properly maintained
- Lead, guide, and support the crew on board
- Coordinate daily activities and ensure an efficient division of tasks
- Welcome, inform, and assist guests throughout the trip
- Create a welcoming, relaxed, and professional atmosphere on board
- Assist with mooring, unmooring, and other operational duties
- Inspect the vessel, equipment, and materials and promptly report damage, malfunctions, or other concerns
- Ensure the vessel remains clean, presentable, and ready to sail
- Roll up your sleeves and assist with cleaning, maintenance, and other duties when needed
- Represent BlueFinn in a positive and professional way towards our guests
Who are we looking for?
You’re someone both your crew and your guests can rely on. You take responsibility, communicate clearly, and stay calm when circumstances change or quick decisions need to be made. You know how to lead without placing yourself above the crew and have no problem jumping in and helping wherever needed.
- You hold a valid commercial boating license that meets the applicable requirements in Curaçao
- You hold a valid First Aid certificate and are able to respond appropriately in a medical emergency
- You hold a valid health certificate issued by the local GGD or meet the applicable requirements to obtain one
- You have a strong understanding of maritime safety procedures and regulations
- You have experience operating and manoeuvring vessels
- You’re comfortable taking responsibility for guests, crew, and vessel
- You have strong leadership and communication skills
- You’re hospitable, service-minded, and comfortable interacting with guests from different nationalities
- You’re practical, proactive, and solution-oriented
- You’re physically fit and feel at home in a maritime working environment
- You have a good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written
- You’re flexible and understand that working in tourism also means working weekends and public holidays
What do we offer?
You’ll step into a responsible role where no two days at sea are quite the same. You’ll work on the water with a close-knit crew and guests from all over the world, with the trust and responsibility to lead your vessel and crew safely and professionally.
- A varied and responsible role on the water
- Working as part of an enthusiastic and professional team
- A unique workplace on and around Curaçao
