The Ultimate Day Trip, Go to Klein Curacao

Picture this: an uninhabited island in the heart of the Caribbean, where pearl-white beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, the ocean sparkles in endless shades of blue, and a tall, pink lighthouse stands watch in the middle of it all. Sounds like paradise? That’s because it is: welcome to Klein Curaçao.

This could be your next escape. Step aboard one of BlueFinn’s spacious catamarans and sail away to this breathtaking destination. The journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions, and thanks to the stable build of our catamarans, even those prone to seasickness can enjoy a smooth ride.

Upon arrival, we anchor just off the coast. You can dive straight into the crystal-clear water for a refreshing swim to shore, or take a short ride on our dinghy. Once on the island, your time is your own: snorkel among vibrant marine life, dive into the blue, wander the untouched landscape, or simply sink into the soft white sand and let the island’s serene beauty wash over you.

Our friendly crew is with you every step of the way, serving up unlimited drinks, making sure you’re comfortable, and preparing a delicious BBQ lunch that’s all part of the experience. A day with BlueFinn to Klein Curaçao isn’t just a trip, it’s a memory in the making.

An impression of Our Klein Curacao Trip

What To Do At Klein Curacao

Although Klein Curacao is only a small island in the large Caribbean Sea, it offers so much to do, for so many different interests, in such a small space. Dare devils, sun seekers, underwater admirers and for those that love total tranquility, Klein Curacao is definitely a pearl to visit!

Snorkeling

Klein Curacao is known for its beauty under water. You can easily enter the water and snorkel anywhere on the lee side of the island. The best place to spot sea turtles is - facing shore from the boat - down the beach to the right. Here you can also swim directly to the drop-off, which is quite deep at around thirty feet. Here you can see bigger fish and below some larger hard and soft corals and sponges.

There is a more daring snorkel spot all the way to the end of the beach to the left. This spot does have a warning, because of the fairly strong currents that come around the tip of the island, creating an opposite current, pulling you out towards the tip of Klein Curacao. It is one of the best snorkeling spots with excellent depths and visibility for a snorkeler, lots of colorful fish, a good variety of hard and soft corals and a drop-off, but again, be very careful if you snorkel here that you will not be dragged out and that you return before you are tired.

* This spot is not suitable for beginner or weak swimmers. Don't try snorkeling here without fins on your feet! BlueFinn Charters provides snorkel mask and pipe. Fins are not included nor can be rented on board. Please bring your own fins from the mainland if you plan to snorkel here.

Sunbathing

Klein Curacao is pure nature. The only structures on the island are the old pink lighthouse, a private beach house and a few huts where fisherman stay when on the island. The beach is a half mile long stretch of pearly white, soft sand, ideal for sunbathing. We recommend using sunscreens with a higher SPF, because the sun can become very hot and unforgiving. You might not feel the intensity of the sun's rays because of the cool sea breeze, but you will feel the result at the end of the day if you don't take good care of your skin. Please tan responsibly.

Hiking

The island is very suitable for sun and sea lovers, but hikers will certainly enjoy a trip to Klein Curacao too. You can come ashore with a rubber boat, so feel free to bring your best hiking gear and see some of the sights. There is the abandoned pink lighthouse, a few shipwrecks, ruins and graves. Usually the island has very little vegetation for easy walking. Apply sunscreen as it can gradually get very hot on the island as the day progresses.

Scuba Diving

Klein Curacao is considered one of the best diving destinations in the Caribbean Sea, thanks to its diverse and unspoiled ecosystem. The underwater world of the islands offers everything from beautiful coral reefs, to drop-offs, huge schools of colorful fish and exciting underwater caves to swim through. Klein Curacao is a suitable destination for scuba divers of all levels.

If you have your own diving equipment and tanks, you can take them with you for free. Please just let us know in advance for storage space purposes. If you want to rent diving equipment, you can indicate this through your reservation request. Our diving center Scuba Do, located on-site at Jan Thiel Beach, takes care of your medical form and equipment.  www.scubadocuracao.com

Kite Surfing

Klein Curacao is the ultimate kite surfing paradise, with steady offshore winds from January to September and waves coming in on both sides of the island. On the lee side, the water is calm, ideal to bump and jump, while more to the windward side of the island the wind picks up, waves rise, making it ideal for the more advanced wave riders. Note that Klein Curacao is an offshore place, about 1.5 hours by boat from the mainland and has limited safety (no official lifeboats), so it’s not a place for beginners! If you want to go kite surfing at Klein Curacao, you can bring your own equipment for free, just let us know in advance for storage space purposes.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the Klein Curacao Trip

I arrive on Curacao by cruise, can I join this trip?

The Klein Curacao departs from Jan Thiel Beach at 8:00 AM. This location is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from the Curaçao Cruise Terminal. Unfortunately, no cruise ship arrives very early in the morning to allow time for check-in at 07:45 AM.

I am prone to seasickness, can I go?

Usually during the windy season (January to July) the ocean water can be a bit rough. This may affect people prone to seasickness on their way to Klein Curacao. Not so much on the way back because we then sail with the waves. However, if you are prone to seasickness, it is wise to eat a light meal an hour before departure, avoid alcohol and caffeine, hydrate well, keep fresh air flowing by heading to the netting or sit on the hull of the catamaran and look at the horizon. If you do get seasick, our experienced and compassionate crew is here to help and make you feel as comfortable as possible.

How much time does it take to go to Klein Curaçao?

This depends on the weather conditions, but on average it takes the catamaran 1 hour and 45 minutes.

What should I bring?

Towel, sunscreen and anything else you like against the sun: sunglasses, hat, cap, swim shirt. The sun can shine quite brightly on the island and except for a few huts, there is not much shade on the island. If you are prone to seasickness, it is wise to eat well an hour before departure, as there is no breakfast on board.

How long does the walk to the wreck and lighthouse take?

Between 20-30 minutes. Put on your slippers, apply sunscreen, wear a hat or anything else to protect yourself from the sun. Inland it gets very hot as the day goes on.

Are there any restrooms on Klein Curacao?

No, there are no restrooms on land. The catamarans have 2 marine toilets on board.

How long will we stay on Klein Curaçao?

Depending on the weather conditions and the boat. Catamaran BlueFinn2 stays on Klein Curacao from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm on average and Catamaran BlueFinn from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Is it possible to Scuba Dive at Klein Curaçao?

Scuba divers can only join us aboard catamaran BlueFinn for a 1-tank dive during the trip to Klein Curacao and the West Coast trip. Please contact Dive Center Scuba Do directly to make arrangements. You can also charter Kailani, who is fully equipped for scuba diving, or join a 2-tank boat dive aboard Kailani to East Point operated by Scuba Do most Wednesdays.

What Does It Cost To Go To Klein Curacao?

Between our two catamarans, we travel 7 times a week to beautiful Klein Curacao. Departure is at 8:00 am (BlueFinn2) and 8:30 am (BlueFinn) from Zanzibar, Jan Thiel Beach.

Why Choose Our BlueFinn Catamarans?

From smaller, private, motor boats to larger passenger ferry sized vessels, there are a few boat tour companies that can take you to Klein Curacao. So why choose BlueFinn Charters? Although it is not our policy to brag about ourselves, we are glad you asked!

BlueFinn Charters is a boat company with more than 25 years of experience in the (pilot) boat industry, where skills and safety are paramount above all else. Rest assured, you are in safe and competent hands. All crew members are first aid certified and the majority are also certified captain.

With an extensive fleet, BlueFinn Charters always has a boat at your disposal. Our fleet consists of 2 of Curacao’s biggest and newest catamarans: Catamaran BlueFinn and Catamaran BlueFinn2. Our motor yacht Kailani, used for private trips, completes the tribe.

On our regular day trips our Catamarans are at your service. On a technical note, catamarans in general favor other types of boats, because they have natural buoyancy, making them unsinkable. Seasickness is slim to none, because catamarans are very stable, have little to no heeling, and don’t roll at anchor. If you are susceptible to seasickness, our extra-large catamarans are definitely the right choice.

Both being a sailing catamaran you get to enjoy a 2-in-1 boating experience. On the way out to Klein Curacao, we travel by motor, on our way back to Curacao, we hoist sails and on the wings of the wind sail back to the mainland (weather permitting).

On the fun side, the extra-large webbing that our catamarans offer is unique to the experience! Jump on, get wet and see wild dolphins swimming under you. But really bringing everything to life is the unforgettable crazy crew! One of a kind, full of energy and wit, they take care of your every need from the moment you arrive at the pier, all the way through puking, lunch, happy hour and beyond! They prepare a mean BBQ buffet and serve cold drinks all day long! They are the ones who made our Captains Happy Hour famous…! Come see why!
