6 Things to do at Klein Curacao

At just 1.7 square kilometers, Klein Curaçao is just a small island in the great Caribbean Sea. Yet the uninhabited island, just off the coast of Curaçao, has an intriguing history, mystery and beauty. The few structures found on the island tell its story and offer much to see and to do. Here is our list of 5 things to do while on the island of Klein Curacao.

1. Hike

Adventurers will certainly enjoy a trip to Klein Curacao. In the middle of the island stands the abandoned pink lighthouse and not far from it the remains of the island’s first quarantine building and several graves. There are some shipwrecks on the coast. Inland it usually looks like a dreary desert, with little to no vegetation and lots of lava rocks and stones. Wearing water shoes or slippers is a must on this adventurous hike.

2. Snorkel

Klein Curaçao is internationally known for its underwater beauty. From the sandy beach you can easily enter the water and snorkel on the lee side of the island. You can see sea turtles, lots of colorful fish and at the drop off you can see bigger fish and a good variety of hard and soft corals. If you are really lucky you can even see dolphins here.

3. Sunbathe

The beach is a half mile long stretch of pearly white, soft sand, ideal for sunbathing. We recommend using sunscreens with a higher SPF, because the sun can become very hot and unforgiving. You might not feel the intensity of the sun's rays because of the cool sea breeze, but you will feel the result at the end of the day if you don't take good care of your skin. Please tan responsibly.

4. Relax

Klein Curacao is pure nature, an oasis of tranquility. The only structures on the island are the old pink lighthouse, a private beach house and a few huts where fishermen stay when they are on the island. No roads, no shops, no bars, just an elongated white beach and the Caribbean ocean all around. You only hear the sound of the ocean and the birds flying overhead. The perfect place to relax and become one with nature. You can relax on the boat or on the island with a book and bathing suit.

5. Scuba Dive

Klein Curacao has a diverse and pristine ecosystem, making this destination one of the best diving destinations in the Caribbean Sea. From pristine coral reefs to drop-offs, huge schools of colorful fish and underwater caves, Klein Curaçao is a suitable destination for divers of all levels. Diving equipment is not for rent on the island, so you must bring it from the mainland. The 5-star PADI Dive Resort Dive Center Scuba Do, located on Jan Thiel Beach, can assist you with anything you need.

6.Kitesurf

Klein Curaçao is the ultimate kitesurfing paradise. On the leeward side the water is calm, ideal for punching and jumping, while on the windward side the wind picks up, the waves rise, ideal for the more advanced wave riders. If you want to go kite surfing at Klein Curacao, you need to bring your own equipment, because there is nothing for rent or sale on the island. Note that Klein Curaçao is an offshore place, about 1.5 hours by boat from the mainland and has no official lifeboats, so it's not a place for beginners!

In short, adventurers, sun worshipers, tranquility seekers, underwater explorers all get their needs met in this compact space called Klein Curaçao. Book your trip to Klein Curacao if you haven't already, because you will definitely enjoy the day and always remember it!

The pink lighthouse of Klein Curacao

Right in the middle of the 1.7 square kilometers uninhabited island called Klein Curacao, stands the iconic pink lighthouse. The first lighthouse was built in 1850, but destroyed by unforgiving hurricanes in 1877. The next lighthouse, which still stands today, was built in the interior of the island. It was home to fearless lighthouse keepers, who stayed in the adjoining rooms, without running water or electricity

Standing alone in the middle of the island, it is now abandoned. The wooden stairs to the top of the lighthouse are still intact, as are the two stories of rooms. The 22-meter (66 feet) high tower had to be rebuilt three times but is still functioning today. Because of the many shipwrecks, putting the lighthouse back to work was more than necessary. Despite all the technologies we use today, Klein Curacao is still a very difficult island to maneuver around. Most recently, in 1982 a large oil tanker, the Maria Bianca Guidesman, stranded on the windward side of Klein Curacao. And not only ships, but also yachts have fallen victim to its ferocious waters. In 2008, the light tower was given a LED beacon with solar panels that still flashes every 15 seconds.

Klein Curacao is a low, flat island which makes it difficult to spot from the bridge of a ship. The island has even been called “a worthless cliff” and “ stands in the way traffic on the ocean”. But true, many shipwrecks are on Klein Curacao because of the very strong currents and the unforgiving north-east winds. This combination of wind and current makes it very difficult for even the best of captains to steer their ship around the island.

stairs light house

The iconic pink lighthouse is definitely one of the sights to visit while on Klein Curacao. The distance from the bounty beach where the recreational boats anchor to the lighthouse is not too far for a walk. Try to go there first , because it can gradually get very hot and the wind is still in the middle of the island as the day progresses.

It is not every day that you get to say you that you have visited an uninhabited sunlit island, full of history and mystery. So take a boat trip to Klein Curacao for some well-deserved bragging rights and some surreal photos!

While embarking on an exciting snorkeling trip, it's crucial to prioritize safety to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience. In this article, we will explore essential snorkeling safety tips Curacao, to help you stay safe and make the most of your underwater adventures.

Essential Snorkeling Safety Tips Curacao

Choosing the right snorkeling gear

  1. Importance of quality equipment: Investing in high-quality snorkeling gear is crucial for your safety and comfort. Good equipment minimizes the risk of malfunctions, ensuring a more enjoyable experience. Make sure to use gear from reputable brands and consider reading reviews before purchasing.
  2. Mask, snorkel, and fins selection: Your mask should fit securely and comfortably, creating a watertight seal on your face. Choose a snorkel with a flexible tube and a comfortable mouthpiece. Fins should fit snugly without causing discomfort or chafing. Trying out the gear in-store or renting from a reliable rental shop can help you find the best fit.

Buddy system

  1. Why you should never snorkel alone: Snorkeling with a partner, or using the buddy system, is a key safety measure. It ensures that someone is always there to assist you in case of an emergency or any unexpected situation.
  2. Benefits of snorkeling with a partner: A snorkeling partner not only provides assistance in emergencies but also enhances your overall experience. You can share your discoveries, learn from each other's expertise, and create unforgettable memories together.

Snorkeling conditions and awareness

  1. Checking weather and water conditions: Before heading out for a snorkeling session, always check the weather forecast and water conditions. Avoid snorkeling during storms, high winds, or rough seas, as they can make it difficult to navigate and increase the risk of accidents.
  2. Identifying potential hazards: Be aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards in the area, such as sharp rocks, shallow coral reefs, or aggressive marine life. Maintain a safe distance from these hazards and stay vigilant at all times.
  3. Tips for avoiding strong currents: Strong currents can pose a significant risk to snorkelers. It's essential to be aware of the water conditions and to stay close to the shore or designated snorkeling areas. If you find yourself caught in a current, don't panic; instead, swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current before swimming back to safety.

Preparing for Your Snorkeling Adventure

Knowing your limits

  1. Importance of staying within your comfort zone: Snorkeling can be a thrilling and rewarding experience, but it's essential to know and respect your personal limits. Don't push yourself to dive deeper or explore unfamiliar areas if you're not comfortable or experienced enough. Stay within your skill level and gradually build your abilities as you gain more experience.
  2. Building snorkeling skills and experience: Enrolling in a snorkeling course or taking guided tours can help you develop your skills and become more comfortable in the water. These opportunities also allow you to learn from experienced instructors or guides, who can share valuable safety tips and techniques.

Staying healthy and fit

  1. Importance of staying hydrated and eating well: Staying properly hydrated and nourished is crucial for a safe and enjoyable snorkeling experience. Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your snorkeling session and consume a balanced meal to keep your energy levels up. Avoid heavy meals right before snorkeling, as they may cause discomfort or fatigue while swimming.
  2. Physical conditioning for snorkeling: Being in good physical shape can significantly improve your snorkeling experience and safety. Regular exercise, including swimming, can help build your stamina and endurance, allowing you to snorkel for longer periods and explore more of Curacao's underwater treasures. Also, consider incorporating flexibility and strength training exercises into your fitness routine to enhance your snorkeling abilities.

Learn basic water safety and rescue techniques.

  1. Importance of knowing CPR and first aid: Accidents can happen, and it's essential to be prepared for emergencies while snorkeling. Learning CPR and basic first aid can be life-saving skills in the event of an accident or injury. Many organizations offer courses to teach these essential skills, and it's a valuable investment for any snorkeler.
  2. Understanding and using signaling devices: Familiarize yourself with common snorkeling safety equipment, such as surface marker buoys (SMBs) and whistles. These signaling devices can help you communicate with your buddy or alert others to your location in case of an emergency. Carry these devices with you whenever you snorkel and know how to use them effectively.

6 Things to bring to klein Curacao

Booked a day trip to Klein Curacao? Then get ready for amazing turquoise waters and a long white sand beach! If this is your first time to this remote island, you may be wondering what to bring with you. BlueFinn Charters offers all-inclusive travel, which means food and drinks are included, but for your added convenience and the overall experience of the trip, consider these tips.

1. Breakfast

If you are susceptible to seasickness catamarans in general favor other types of boats. This because catamarans are very stable, have little to no heeling, and don’t roll at anchor. However, if you are prone to seasickness, it is recommended that you have breakfast before boarding and take a motion sickness medication as a precaution. Medicines are not available on board.

2. Camera

3. Sun Protection

With almost no structures on the island to provide shade and a pearl white beach half a mile long, it is safe to call Klein Curaçao a sun-drenched bounty island with a desert climate. Sunscreen with a higher SPF, hats, (swimming) shirts with long sleeves and sunglasses are not an unnecessary luxury but a necessity! Bring everything you need to protect yourself from the relentless hot sun! Especially if you take a walk inland to explore the lighthouse, ruins and shipwreck. You may not feel the intensity of the suns rays because of the cool sea breeze, but you will see and feel the result at the end of the day if you don't use the right sun protection and take good care of your skin.

4. Snorkel Gear

Klein Curacao is known for its rich underwater world. As soon as you enter the water, you immediately see a wide variety of fish and sea turtles! On the leeward side of the island you can easily snorkel everywhere. On board we have free snorkel gear, mask and pipe. If you want to snorkel with fins, this is something to take with you on the trip. If you prefer to scuba dive, then diving equipment is also something to take with you.

5. Hiking shoes

On the island there are an abandoned lighthouse, ruins, graves and some shipwrecks. All a must to see. They seem far away from the mooring, but it is quite a short walk. Usually the island has little vegetation for easy walking, but water shoes or slippers are a must as the rocky land gets far too hot for bare feet.

6. Towel

Although you can dry off just by standing around, we recommend that you bring a towel. It helps you dry off quickly, but also keeps you warm when the sea breeze is cold. A set of dry clothes can also be useful, especially if you plan on hanging out on the web where you are sure to get wet.

Enjoy the trip and your day at Klein Curacao! Book your trip here if you haven't already done so.
